10 Tips for Reading Online Stories to Children

  1. Preview stories before you read and choose age-appropriate tales that match kids’ interests. Look for engaging characters, plots that build curiosity, and vibrant illustrations.
  2. For young readers, pick stories with rhyme, repetition, and opportunities to predict what happens next. These qualities all support early literacy skills.
  3. Download stories in advance so you can read smoothly without WiFi glitches. Save them in a dedicated kid story folder for quick access.
  4. Project stories on the largest screen available and zoom in on illustrations so children can see details. Laptops, tablets, and smart boards all work well.
  5. Change character voices and use props to act out dialogue. Ham it up just like you would with print books! Costumes and puppets also bring stories to life.
  6. Occasionally pause to ask questions about what’s happening and why. Speculate on what will happen next. This builds critical thinking skills.
  7. Define new words using kid-friendly comparisons like “iridescent means shiny like a butterfly wing.” Making connections cements new vocabulary.
  8. Establish free time afterward to discuss stories. Conversational recall promotes comprehension and bonds with you.
  9. For wiggly kids, read while swinging or pacing to discharge excess energy. Singing songs also resets attention spans.
  10. Most importantly, share your delight! Laugh, gasp, and empathize together. Your modeling teaches kids to engage deeply with stories.

The Girl and the Secret Unicorn Forest

The Girl and the Secret Unicorn Forest - story for kids

Lina was playing in the backyard one sunny afternoon

when something caught her eye by the garden shed.

It was a tiny unicorn!

It was no bigger than a rabbit,

with a shiny white coat,

a rainbow mane and a long silvery horn on its head.

“A real tiny unicorn!” gasped Lina.

But before she could get a closer look,

the mini unicorn disappeared around the shed.

Lina raced after it,

following a trail of golden hoof prints that led from behind the shed into the nearby woods.

“Wait, come back!” called Lina

as she ran deeper into the forest following the glowing prints.

Soon she stumbled into a sun-dappled clearing filled with dozens more mini unicorns – some with rainbow tails,

others glittery wings, and all no more than five inches tall!

Lina froze in awe as the tiny mythical creatures frolicked happily around wooden mushroom tables and tree stump chairs

an entire magical mini unicorn village hidden in the heart of the woods!

A kind-eyed lavender unicorn with rainbow braids approached Lina.

“Hello human, I’m Princess Astra. Welcome to Willowhoof village!”

she nickered in a voice as delicate as twinkling bells.

Princess Astra gave Lina a tour while explaining how unicorns have kept their villages secret for centuries to protect their magic from greedy humans.

But Lina seemed a pure-hearted young girl who stumbled upon them by fate.

Other little unicorns

showed Lina their orchard grove where rainbow sap dripped from the trees into jars to make magical glitter nectar juice.

They introduced her to their fairy friends who helped maintain the secrecy and magic of the forest.

As the sun set,

Princess Astra had the royal painter Pixie gift Lina a custom portrait of herself riding on Astra’s back so she’d never forget their special day.

Lina hugged her new tiny equine friends

and promised to always guard the secret of the magical hidden unicorn forest

as she headed home under the first twinkling stars.

Lina still visits Willowhoof village

whenever there’s a full moon,

galloping all night with the fairy folk on noble steeds just inches tall,

enjoying the friendship and camaraderie of the entire tiny herd more magnificent than any unicorn fantasy she could have ever imagined!
