10 Tips for Reading Online Stories to Children

  1. Preview stories before you read and choose age-appropriate tales that match kids’ interests. Look for engaging characters, plots that build curiosity, and vibrant illustrations.
  2. For young readers, pick stories with rhyme, repetition, and opportunities to predict what happens next. These qualities all support early literacy skills
  3. Download stories in advance so you can read smoothly without WiFi glitches. Save them in a dedicated kid story folder for quick access.
  4. Project stories on the largest screen available and zoom in on illustrations so children can see details. Laptops, tablets, and smart boards all work well.
  5. Change character voices and use props to act out dialogue. Ham it up just like you would with print books! Costumes and puppets also bring stories to life.
  6. Occasionally pause to ask questions about what’s happening and why. Speculate on what will happen next. This builds critical thinking skills.
  7. Define new words using kid-friendly comparisons like “iridescent means shiny like a butterfly wing.” Making connections cements new vocabulary.
  8. Establish free time afterward to discuss stories. Conversational recall promotes comprehension and bonds with you.
  9. For wiggly kids, read while swinging or pacing to discharge excess energy. Singing songs also resets attention spans.
  10. Most importantly, share your delight! Laugh, gasp, and empathize together. Your modeling teaches kids to engage deeply with stories.
The Great Treehouse Adventure - bedtime stories for kids

It was the first day of summer vacation

best friends Amy and Zoe were looking for an adventure.

“Let’s build a treehouse!” said Amy.

Zoe loved the idea.

The girls found the tallest, strongest oak tree in the woods behind Amy’s house and got to work.

They gathered every spare plank, piece of plywood, and nail they could find in Amy’s garage.

Their hands sawed, hammered, and fastened each section into place.

By lunchtime,

the basic frame was done.

After scarfing down peanut butter sandwiches,

Amy and Zoe scavenged the house for supplies.

They raided old sheets and blankets for curtains and bedding.

From the recycling bin they snagged containers, tubes, and boxes to use for storage.

And the arts and crafts closet offered up posters, markers, and ornaments to decorate with.

By the time the sun was setting,

 the treehouse was complete.

The small wooden shack sat sturdily between the oak branches, covered in a patchwork of fabrics.

Inside,

the girls had set up an old mattress with pillows and blankets for a “bedroom.”

Their storage bins held snacks, art supplies, books, and flashlights at the ready.

Exhausted from their work,

Amy and Zoe decided to officially inaugurate the treehouse by camping out that night.

As darkness fell,

they turned on the lantern and ate candy while telling ghost stories.

Eventually the two got sleepy and crawled into their makeshift beds.

In the middle of the night,

Amy woke to strange noises outside.

Creak…Thump…Creak… went the sounds.

Amy shook Zoe awake and whispered

“I think there’s something moving out there!”

The girls peered out the window into the woods.

In the moonlight,

they were startled to see a large wolf lumbering around the tree!

“Oh no! A wolf is trying to get into our treehouse!” cried Zoe.

The wolf sniffed at the ladder and clawed at the trunk,

trying to find a way up.

Amy racked her brain for a way to scare it off. Grabbing a flashlight and shovel,

the two girls banged loudly on the walls and shouted at the top of their lungs.

Startled by the commotion,

the wolf yelped and scurried back into the forest.

Amy and Zoe cheered, proud to have protected their new fortress.

The rest of the night was peaceful and the tired pair fell back asleep.

In the morning light,

Amy and Zoe were relieved to find the wolf was gone for good.

Their treehouse adventure had been exciting and scary,

but now it truly felt like their own special hideaway.

They planned to spend the whole summer playing, reading, and dreaming big dreams together in their lofty lair.

It was just the start of many magical memories to come!
