10 Tips for Reading Online Stories to Children

  1. Preview stories before you read and choose age-appropriate tales that match kids’ interests. Look for engaging characters, plots that build curiosity, and vibrant illustrations.
  2. For young readers, pick stories with rhyme, repetition, and opportunities to predict what happens next. These qualities all support early literacy skills.
  3. Download stories in advance so you can read smoothly without WiFi glitches. Save them in a dedicated kid story folder for quick access.
  4. Project stories on the largest screen available and zoom in on illustrations so children can see details. Laptops, tablets, and smart boards all work well.
  5. Change character voices and use props to act out dialogue. Ham it up just like you would with print books! Costumes and puppets also bring stories to life.
  6. Occasionally pause to ask questions about what’s happening and why. Speculate on what will happen next. This builds critical thinking skills.
  7. Define new words using kid-friendly comparisons like “iridescent means shiny like a butterfly wing.” Making connections cements new vocabulary.
  8. Establish free time afterward to discuss stories. Conversational recall promotes comprehension and bonds with you.
  9. For wiggly kids, read while swinging or pacing to discharge excess energy. Singing songs also resets attention spans.
  10. Most importantly, share your delight! Laugh, gasp, and empathize together. Your modeling teaches kids to engage deeply with stories.

Clank was a little robot who lived in a gadget workshop.

All day long he helped make gears, springs, and computer chips.

Clank worked hard beside the other robot helpers who were his friends.

His favorite friend was Zee-Zee,

a robot that was purple and round.

The two robots loved telling each other jokes and stories while they worked.

One sunny morning,

the workshop owner Mr. Rivet announced he was entering the robots in the annual Bot-9000 robotics competition!

Everyone buzzed with excitement.

They would get to build cool new robots to compete against other machines.

Mr. Rivet asked Clank and Zee-Zee to team up for the contest.

The pair jumped up and down, beeping joyfully.

“We can build the best bot ever!” said Clank.

For the next few weeks,

they drew designs and gathered parts.

Using scraps from around the workshop,

Clank and Zee-Zee constructed a red and yellow robot named Bolt.

The night before the contest,

Clank was too excited to power down.

He kept running simulations of how Bolt would perform and going over their coding.

“Try not to worry, buddy,” said Zee-Zee.

“Bolt is awesome and we’re going to have so much fun!”

At the competition the next day,

the bots lined up as crowds cheered.

Clank’s robotic heart pounded with nervous energy.

Then the games began!

Obstacle courses, races, and tests of robot strength and skill.

No matter the task,

Bolt performed excellently.

The little robot even beat much bigger machines!

In the final round,

Bolt zipped around the track faster than ever before.

As Bolt crossed the finish line,

Clank leapt and Zee-Zee beeped in celebration.

The pair had won the gold medal!

That night back home in the workshop,

Clank and Zee-Zee replayed videos of their victory.

“This was the best day ever!” said Clank.

Mr. Rivet came over and engraved their medal with the words “Bot-9000 First Place.”

Clank knew he would cherish his medal forever as a reminder of the day he and his friend built an amazing robot together.

As Clank powered down for the night,

he realized you didn’t have to be the biggest robot to accomplish great things.

You just needed good friends, hard work, and belief in yourself.

Clank smiled,

knowing he had all of those things.

-The end.-
